Congratulations to Mr Gordon Booth of Bassendean, WA winner of a Rothenberger Rocut 26TC Plastic Pipe Shear for his Dec/Jan Tip:
Formula to determine pipe length for 45 degree offset
There may be the occasion where you will need to cut a length of pipe for a 45 degree offset. This can sometimes be tricky and time consuming.
The simple formula below will help calculate the correct length of pipe to cut for a quick and easy install. This is especially handy with pre-fab work in confined areas. The formula works with all types of pipe work including pvc, copper and steel etc.
Example: 100mm PVC pipe. Offset distance (A) is 315mm. Distance between centre of bend and end of socket (B) is 25mm. Using the formula above: (315 x 1.414) minus (25 x 2) = 395mm length of pipe.
Note: You need to measure the two distances (A and B) with a ruler/tape measure and enter these into the formula. When cutting the length of pipe – make sure you cut the ends ‘square’ so the pipe will fit correctly into the socket bends.
