One of Queensland’s most famous schools is using Caroma Smartflush® toilets to cut its water
use and reduce maintenance costs.
As part of a retrofit of every toilet and bathroom, St Peter’s Lutheran College, Indooroopilly, has installed 200 new Caroma Trident Sovereign 2000 toilet suites, featuring the award-winning Smartflush® water-saving technology.
The move comes in response to the Queensland Government’s Water Efficiency Management Plan (WEMP), which was introduced three years ago to help secure adequate water supply for Brisbane and surrounding areas.
The WEMP program heightens enforcement of the existing water laws and implements a number
of long term strategies to maximise water recycling and reduce unnecessary water wastage for
businesses. It ensures water users of more than one million litres per year have water efficient
appliances, like low-flow taps, trigger sprays, showerheads, urinals and cooling towers in place.
St Peter’s Lutheran College Building Manager Garry Evans was responsible for the retrofit.
He said the school sought expert advice from the University of Queensland as well as several
independent water conservation specialists before deciding on the Caroma Trident Sovereign
toilets for the entire school.
“We are extremely happy with the result. We spent a lot of time looking at every available product
on the market before deciding. We knew we had to have fixtures that used the lowest possible
amount of water and that is why we chose the Caroma toilets,” he said.
Mr Evans said the school anticipated big savings in its annual water consumption bill, and that the
Caroma toilets were great products which met all the WEMP program regulations.
“Before the retrofit, the average toilet unit used about nine litres. The new units only use 4.5 or
three litres. We had one of every type of cistern and toilet you could imagine. Maintaining them
was expensive.
“They were in desperate need of an upgrade, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for water
consumption, cost and environmental reasons. Water waste is a huge issue for all of us in
Queensland and we aim to be responsible community members,” Mr Evans added.
The new Caroma Trident Sovereign 2000 units compliment the bright modern design of the school and help create a clean environment with an emphasis on energy and water saving, in addition to ease of maintenance.
St Peter’s Lutheran College is the largest Lutheran school in Australia with a campus spread over
21 hectares in the Brisbane suburb of Indooroopilly. The school has 190 staff and 2,000 students, including 150 full-time boarders.
